With stress and anxiety being a part of most people’s day to day life, here are some helpful tips to help you manage.
Our world is constantly evolving and getting smaller thanks to innovative technologies. Suddenly, we have three times as many things to do throughout our day but with the same amount of minutes. Between multiple phone calls, texts, extra-curricular activities and everything else we need to deal with on a day-to-day basis, stress can quickly reach alarming levels. There are a few things we have learned to do in order to make our stress levels manageable. Below are a few tips to live by to keep your stress levels at bay and try to live a more calm, easy going life.
Edit stressful people and situations out of your life
We all know people who too often bring nothing but anxiety and sadness into your life, but somehow we still keep them around. If you’re exhausted dealing with their drama and the cons outweigh the goods in your relationship, it may be time to cut ties for good. This means verbally telling them that you’re through with this friendship/relationship and removing them from your life entirely — including from your social media groups. Things can turn complicated if you share a lot of mutual friends or they are close with your family, but it will be worth the tumult to make you feel less emotionally drained day-to-day.
Practice self-care
We often forget to be kind to ourselves both mentally and physically after a taxing day. For some, winding down means sitting in a hot bath and doing absolutely nothing, while others relax with a good book and a cup of tea. Whatever helps you hang loose, do it! Do it as a way to thank yourself for all the hard work you’ve done all day when no one else seems to appreciate what you’ve accomplished. But more so, do it because you deserve it, whatever your current mental state. Life is too short to not treat yourself properly and with respect. So pamper, celebrate and love yourself.
Do something you love
Set aside time to do the things you have a fierce passion for. It can be as simple as sitting down and reading to your four-year-old or as complex as planning a week abroad. Whatever it is, completely immerse yourself in the task and get lost in the act of doing something you love. Personally, clay crafts and scrapbooking keep my mind busy and my stress to a manageable level, but it takes dedication to discover something you enjoy doing and stick with it.
Exercise when you can
Exercising releases endorphins, a chemical in the brain which makes us feel good (think of them as our body’s natural painkillers). One heart-hammering workout session can have a positive effect on your body that will have you feeling better than ever for hours. Regular exercise will keep your body in shape and your mind feeling better for longer periods of time.
