Get on the right track to keep your feet healthy and help prevent unwanted foot problems.
Keeping your feet as happy and healthy is as important as monitoring the food we eat, especially if you’re on your feet all day for work. Rather than treat problems as they arise, it’s better to prevent them before they come. For instance, ingrown toenails, calluses and sores can go unnoticed and worsen into more serious issues if they are not dealt with right away, instead of after they become a major inconvenience. Get familiar with your feet: inspect, clean and care for them. Here are just a few ways to keep your feet in good shape.
Look into your (in)sole
Shoes are generally “one size fits all” when it comes to insoles but in reality that doesn’t work for most. Your shoes should have an insole specifically designed for your foot arch type.
There are three types of arches — low, medium and high — and your insoles should match yours. The insole will distribute your weight more evenly when you walk and run. In turn, your feet won’t get as tired or ache as much with an insole. We recommend getting your feet professionally sized for insoles or using Dr. Scholl’s foot mapping machine to get ones that works best for you.
Moisturize and protect your feet
Keeping your feet moisturized will stop them from drying out and prevent often painful problems like cracked heels. Invest in a good moisturizer that will condition your feet without making them feel overly greasy. The best time to apply foot cream is after a shower, preferably when you’re already in bed. This way, you can lather on the cream and put on some socks to sleep in, giving your feet ample time to soak in the moisturizer. Take care not to apply too much between your toes and if you need to walk around after putting on cream, pull on a pair of socks so you don’t slip and hurt yourself — or leave greasy footprints. If you have extremely dry skin, you might also consider purchasing some oil to use in places where cream alone may not be sufficient.
When in doubt, scrub it out
Pumice stones are an excellent way to exfoliate feet and scrub away calluses. After a steamy shower or bath (or you can soak your feet in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes), rub the pumice stone in a circular motion on your heels. Do this two to three times per week on cracked heels, corns and calluses and you’ll see results within a week or two. Bonus: A pumice stone also has other uses including removing piling/balling from sweaters and can also be broken down into pieces and placed into soil to increase aeration.
